Flying with kids: 10 hacks from experienced parents

A flight with kids doesn't have to be a survival trek. These 10 hacks come straight from parents who've done it a hundred times — cheap, simple and proven to work.

  1. Painter's tape is a toyA roll of painter's tape keeps toddlers busy surprisingly long: stick it on the tray table, peel it off, make shapes. Leaves no residue and weighs nothing.
  2. The hourly-surprise systemWrap one small surprise per flight hour (sticker sheet, mini book, snack). New = interesting, and it gives kids a countable rhythm.
  3. Download everything before departureMovies, shows and games offline on the tablet — plane wifi is slow or expensive. Don't forget the kids' headphones (volume limiter!).
  4. Spare outfit within reachFor the kid and for you. One spilled apple juice in row 23 and you'll understand. Pack each outfit in a separate ziplock — that bag then holds the dirty clothes.
  5. Book strategic seatsAisle + window with (on quiet flights) an empty middle seat as a gamble. Two parents? One in front, one behind is sometimes calmer than all four in a row.
  6. Snacks > toysChewing also helps against ear pain during take-off and landing. Think fruit pouches, breadsticks, raisins — and pack double what you think you'll need.
  7. Let them run before boardingDon't queue up too early. Find a quiet gate and burn the energy off — a tired kid on board is a calm kid on board.
  8. Bring your own (empty) water bottle through securityFill it after the checkpoint. Saves fighting with spilling cups and you always have water for medicine or ear pain.
  9. The stuffed-animal check as a fixed ritualAt every transfer, every toilet visit and when leaving the plane: "Where is [name of the stuffed animal]?" One lost stuffie ruins more than a missed flight.
  10. Divide the tasks beforehandWho handles the carry-ons, who the kids, who the documents? Travelling as a group or two families: agree before you're at the airport, not in the queue.
