“Are we there yeeet?” — not with these games. Twelve classics for the road, all without a screen and without any gear. From toddler to teen: pick one and the miles fly by.

The classics

1. I spy with my little eye — the eternal winner. Pick something you see, name the colour, everyone else guesses.
2. Licence-plate bingo — find a number or letter in order on passing plates. First to 9 wins.
3. Colour counting — each child picks a car colour and counts as many as possible. Great for long motorway stretches.
4. Animal spotting — cow = 1 point, horse = 2, and an animal on a sign counts too. First to 20 wins.

For slightly older kids

1. The story relay — someone starts a story with one sentence, the next builds on it. The sillier the better.
2. 20 questions — someone thinks of something, the rest asks 20 yes/no questions to guess it.
3. Categories — pick a category (animals, countries) and take turns naming one, no repeats.
4. Plate words — make a word from the letters on a plate. XKL becomes “extra kooky llama”.

Quiet moments

1. I’m going on a trip and I’m bringing… — each child adds an item and repeats the whole list. Memory training!
2. Who stays quiet longest — surprisingly popular with parents. Longest silence wins a snack.
3. Cloud watching — what do you see in that cloud? Works with mountains, buildings and shadows too.
